Rhododendron indicum

Name:
Rhododendron indicum
Flower size:
average
Flower colour:
red
Type:
Country:
Japan

A low growing azalea with red flowers that grows in between rocks near river beddings in Japan. It is similar to R.kaempferi in colour and stamen count, but is much lower growing and with narrower leaves.
The compact growth and narrow leaves are likely an adaptation to being flooded by the river during high waters and flash floodings.
This species is the most important ancestor of satsuki azalea hybrids.
