One of the few Kurume azaleas from Japan that was found to be winter-hardy in western Europe. It became one of the main parents for most European obtusum-type garden azaleas. With small, single, red flowers with a compact plant habit it is a very good landscape plant. Probably a R.kiusianum and R.kaempferi hybrid, having inherited the red flowers from R.kaempferi and the smaller leaves and compact plant habit from R.kiusianum.
