R.pulchrum or Hirado azalea. This variety is said to have been grown 'since ancient times' in the Nagasaki and Hirado Island region, in Southern Japan. Said to be a hybrid of R.scabrum and R.mucronatum (R.ripense x R.macrosepalum). Known for it's large leaves and flowers, strong growth, and winter-tenderness, but tolerance of hot summers.
