This variety is famed for its very dark red flowers. Despite some satsuki genetics, this azalea is more similar to Kurume or Obtusum, but lacks foliage with a good autumn colour. It has been a good parent in hybridizing of new azaleas, in part of its genetically heterozygous for colour.
