This variety is famed for it's very dark red flowers. Despite some satsuki genetics, this azalea is more similar to Kurume or Obtusum, but lacks foliage with a good autumn colour. It has been a good parent in hybridizing of new azaleas, in part of it's genetically heterozygous colour.
