‘Kami-no-Yamakirin’ is a popular variety known for its deep purple colour and the very rich and consistent variegation. It is said to have Belgian indica heritage, but the parentage is unknown and the stamen count of 5 suggests it contains a fair bit of R.indicum blood. It is a strong but slow-growing variety with brittle wood. The leaves are relatively large compared to the flower size, which is a drawback. This is compensated by the quality of the flowers. Many new varieties were created in an attempt to improve on this flaw, but few seedlings of ‘Kami-no-Yamakirin’ have flowers that are equally richly variegated.
